KKMBP has a strong foundation of 42 years of sustained research. Late Prof U.K. Kanitkar [1910 to 1992] established Krishi Tantra Sanstha KTS in 1962 with an aim of offering low cost environment friendly alternatives to chemicals used as agricultural inputs.

When most of the scientists were engaged in proving the merits of chemicals on fields, Prof. U. K. Kanitkar [a crop physiologist] started work on Azotobacter, a non-symbiotic nitrogen fixing bacterium. He carried out a massive screening program for isolation of Azotobacter from Indian soils. Prof. U.K.Kanitkar formulated carrier based [lignite] inoculants of Azotobacter. These inoculants were tested on more than 30,000 acres by various government, semi government and individual farmers in varied agro-climatic zones on various crops.

Late Shri. Ravi Kanitkar [ 1953-2005] dedicated his entire life to understanding problems faced by cultivators.Basically a student of medicine, Ravi Kanitkar started helping his father from 1975.

Ravi Kanitkar was adept at harnessing his knowledge of medicine, microbiology, and technical skills to develop and transfer need of the hour technologies. After carrying out a massive screening program he infused new enthusiasm and life into a commodity, which was least understood at that time - biofertilizers. With his knowledge of medicine, he proposed the use of dormant forms of bacteria rather than active cells for formulation. Liquid biofertilizers took root in his mind in 1977 and his dream was realized after rigorous experimentation in 1993.
